yearbook day

Now I'm not going to whine on sappily about the wrap-up of another school year, etc etc but I will say this...my friends are great, I'm glad Junior year is over, and here are some of the funniest notes written in my yearbook. For the sake of Chinese censorship, names have ALL been changed.

"Lizzy,
You will always be a special Asian Surprise in a space in my heart (phone) ."

"Whore.
-Joe."

"Are you in seventh grade?
-Mary"

"Lizzy!
No words can describe my feelings for you.
-Kelly Clarkson"

"Lizzy=Crazy Fun Female Lady.
-Bob."

And my favorite one that I wrote, to a boy I have never dated or liked (in a more-than-friend-way) and never plan on dating or liking:

"Dearest Max,
I am so glad we are getting married. You are a beautiful specimen of a man. Our years of dating have been some of the happiest of my life. I look forward to seeing a LOT of you this summer. ;-)
Love Always,
Your Fiance, Lizzy"

Awwww. I'm going to miss my seniors. But I am the new Senior Class (well, I mean, I am not the sole member, there are other people too) and so I must soldier on through the watery grave of the past etc etc. I'm soo looking forward to summer, despite working a crap job at Warm Rock Offwhitery. And I'm VAIR VAIR joyous to be a SENIOR!! WOO HOO!

Heartfeltfully,

my baby!

Please calm down, I am not nor was actually with child. To this I am referring to my new VEHICLE!

It looks just like that picture, but blue. When it is licensed and I can legally drive it I will show you pictures of the real thing. It is absolutely incredible. I am in love with it more than you could possibly imagine. In fact, I would drive it every day of my life, if only it weren't so very cold here sometimes. During the summer, though, it shall be an absolute MARVEL!

Also, I am FINISHED FINISHED FINISHED with all my lousy schoolwork. For EVER! Or, three months anyways. I am somewhat down because I did not do, as such, well, on my math final. But I passed and that is what counts. Or something.

Go and buy a scooter! Quickly!

Incandescently Happy,
Lizzy :-D

happy memorial day!

Because its a lovely day to think of the dead people etc etc I have decided to show you some of my favorite electronics! I.e. cell phones, computers, cameras, musical devices. Yes, I know that electronics have nothing to do with dead people (usually). No, I do not care. Thank you.

Phoney Phone (not really. I mean it is not phoney, it is real. The phoney part was for the sake of hilariousity. Why do I bother explaining things to you people?):

It is AT&T, which is what I have, and also the best. Because I have it. Its just generally a really marvy phone, though, because it looks cool and calls people. Which is what I look for in a phone. They also have it in retro pink, black, and silver, but I think the white is better-looking.

Video Camcorder:

Isn't this little and cute? Well, it can also record 60 minutes of video at a time. And plugs directly into your computer. You can even record underwater if you want, if you get the special case. I don't know why or how you would want to do that, but I find that mentioning random and irrelevant facts is always good, to keep things from getting boring. Or something.

Digital Camera:

Now I know this camera doesn't look like it was developed by nuclear scientists or anything, but it is my favorite camera ever. It is adorable and take the most amazing pictures. I love it. Deeply. The wedding is in June.

Computer:

The Apple Macbook Pro is just unbeatable, that is all there is to it. The only downside is that is is v. v. pricey. It is more expensive than the Motobravo Milano I just bought. But it is worth it.

Mp3 Device:

A flawless piece of music-playing heaven. It is no good for movies. No iPod is. For that you want a 60" plasma. So don't come crying to me. You want it to play music, and it does. Wonderfully.

I think that is all for today, have fun ogling all these loverly devices and as usual just click on the pic if you want to buy it (and you do)!

LOOVE

lazy summer wear

Here's the perfect outfit for a lazy summer day filled with books and sunshine. Of course, who has lazy summer days, really, so the outfit also works for a daytime errands-and-studying for the ACT day and nighttime-party. I'm that cool. However, please don't hesitate to use my Spring Date outfit, the one with the flowered top, blue jacket and pink bow peep-toes. I'm exceptionally partial to that and it still works just as well for summer nights.

I love this Garden's Secret top. It is, to me, the epitome of summer.

Citizens of Humanity Juniper-Wash Jeans. Perfect beachy hue in a casual, comfy cut.

Lemonade Peep-Toe Sandals echo the yellow flowers in the top, and somehow manage to capture the casual heat of summer right along. Best of all, they're light and easy but still sophisticated enough for nighttime. Maybe.

We have so many bright colors going on already, I figured we had better keep the bag sleek and simple. This Kate Spade Shopper fits the bill, don't you think?

"summer", in theory anyways...

School is basically nearly out for the SUMMERTIME! However, the weather apparently didn't get the memo as it is overcast and cold. I will possibly perform an evening rain dance.

Except that that would call rain, which is the opposite of what I want to do. So I will perform a sun dance. Do they have those? No, it is a place you go skiing and that makes random furniture and things. So forget the weather dance, it is just cold.

Anyways. Today I took a math final. I don't think I did well, even though I studied. It was v.v. frustrating. I am giving up studying, as it seems to do more harm than good in my case.

The bank I have is stupid, so I am thinking I am going to switch banks. I am thinking Washington Mutual. But that could be just because I like their ads. Its hard to say.

Yay for being done with school!!

Love,
Lizzy

basal ganglia and other dirty jokes

Please ignore the title, it is, like most of the things I say, entirely devoid of meaning, merely v. v. funny.

The basal ganglia is actually a part of your brain that does something important, I am sure. I do not concern myself with what it does because I have been functioning normal (ish) for on 17 years now and never before knew that it existed. So I don't think it is going to do much different now that I have become aware of its presence, except for when I pop by to say hello. Which I will not be doing anytime soon, because it is inside my brain and I definitely don't live there. Who would, it is full of rubbish.

ANYWAYS, back to sane subject, I have just completed the hellish task of hand-stitching a brillopads purple border 'round my vest for Victoire International. It took hours and hours and wasted precious moments of my life but was worth it in the end (maybe). Victoire's first runway show will take place tomorrow night. I will be modeling in it, naturally, because I am not yet a bazillionaire and don't have the money to hire real models. Not that I am not the best model for the job, because I assure you I am.

I also have a physiology final tomorrow which I must ace ace ace because I have a 90% and if that doesn't go up my life will be shattered into tiny microscopic pieces and I will have to pick them up and examine them under a microscope to see how they fit together but I probably won't even be able to do the puzzle because I have always been crap at puzzles and with my luck I would still be and...shut up about piuzzles, you get the picture.

So anyways farewell lads and lasses, don't eat anything bigger than your head!

the perfect day

Today was and is The Perfect Day. Do you know why? Because it is Victoria Day! No, I am not just saying that to be filled with hilariousity (which I am), it is a real holiday. Made for me. By some psychic who knew today would be My Day.

Okay, okay, it is a Canadian holdiay. Who knows why it is called Victoria Day; they are Canadian, that says everything in my book.

Anyways, back to my fabby marvy never-been-better day! Here's the play-by-play:
  • 6:30 AM: Woke Up. 1 hour later than intended, but well-rested, happy, and not stressed out.
  • 7:20: At school. Studying for math test, returning books, etc.
  • 8:07: Math test. Went better than expected. Well, even. Glee!
  • 11:40: In the Sewing room. Finishing touches on Victoire, my collection for Wednesday's runway show. Oh okay, it is two items, but still. Lovely beyond repair. Except that my fingers hurt from hand-stitching the purple on my vest with the monstrosity that is an Embroidery Floss needle. Whoever invented them was/is a sadist and quite possibly insane.
  • 1:40something PM: Watching some crap "hilarious" political film in government. Called Mr. Crap goes to Crapville or something equally naff. Actually, sewing on my vest.
  • 2:30ish: At home. Gilmore Girls didn't record, that is the tragedy of life, forcing me to actually partially do my math homework. Even though it is not even do until Friday. I know, I know, I amaze even myself.
  • 7: Ballet class, a.k.a. an excuse to wear very little clothing and generally make a fool of yourself, unless you are me, and then it is a beautiful dance filled with grace and, er...grace. Well, it is my favorite, anyways. And absolutely TOP today.
  • 8:30: Wandering about the neighborhood, buying food for the mad kittycats that will eat my legs otherwise and giving the neighbors money because I am that sort of a compassionate person. Actually because they mowed my lawn. And it wasn't my money, it was my mum's. But still.
  • 9PM: Watching the loverly sunset. Very quickly, as I was being propelled at an alarming clip by His Ugliness the Dog. He moves very fast for having such short legs and being entirely uncoordinated.
  • 9:21PM: Sitting here on the Wonderful World of...Cyberspace. Going to finish my math homework and possibly even study (please do not pass out, I assure you I quite often study, usually when I am insanely bored or alseep.)
Well that is it. I daresay the rest of VICTORIA DAY a.k.a. MY DAY will go just as well as it has so far.

Happy Me Day!
Victoria Elizabeth (Oh okay, Lizzy :-P)

once upon a time

Once upon a time,

In a land far, far away...

There was a whale. His name was Pete. He was a great big four hundred pound whale. He enjoyed eating krill and hanging out with his friends. Every day he went to Whale School, where he did all right but not spectacularly. He wasn't very good at any of the sports he tried to play. He found he was pretty uncoordinated, and not in a charming way. He tried to make friends with the other whales, but they all just thought he was so weird. "Pete is so weird," they would whisper just loud enough for him to hear.

Eventually Pete grew up and became more well-adjusted. He met some people everyone else thought was weird too and they struck up a fine friendship. Of course, it wasn't a very usual friendship because it wasn't a very usual group of people. For example, one time, at a party, Pete and his Family of Freaks went off knocking on random doors. They would walk in to a house and introduce themselves, "This is Lydia the Mute, Teresa the Vampire, Katherine the Disturbed," and so on. They dressed funny, did strange things, were friends with everyone, but hung out only amongst themselves. They came from radically different backgrounds, religions, beliefs, but they made it work. They were wonderfully, blissfully, happy together, these "freaks".

Then one day Pete came to school with horrible news. He swam on over the the Freaks and told them he was moving to a land even farther away. All the Freaks were devastated. They cried, but you couldn't tell, because they were in the ocean and you can't see tears in the ocean. Also, they were whales, that should be explanation enough.

Pete left his friends, the ones that had taken so long to come together and had had such an incredible friendship. He moved away to a place that didn't have anything like them. He made new friends, with a great amount of time...freaks in their own way, less pronounced but just as strange. However, Pete's new friends were not the best crowd. They started eating Weed Krill, which is a whale type of drug. Pete got a little bit scared because his new friends were doing things he didn't want to do. So he let himself grow distant from them over time.

After another eternity Pete made more new friends. For awhile he just went swimming with random people he sort of knew, but that didn't make him very happy. But after a time he found a group of people he really liked and clicked with. He was so happy to have found these people, and everything seemed right in the land. It was great, and he was really very happy to be the place that he was.

At the same time, however, Pete's Freaks were growing more and more distant. He seldom talked to them anymore, and he could feel the bond between them getting weaker. Soon he didn't even know if they all still lived where they used to.

Still, Pete was happy with his new crowd. They were all really salty (don't look at me like I am mad, it is whalespeak for cool). But alas, it was not to be. Pete's new whale friends started to change. Pete didn't really like the direction they were going, but what could he do? After a while, Pete couldn't relate to some of his new crowd anymore. There was trouble in Paradise and a lot of Pete's friends felt it too. But Pete was the one that broke the news to one of his friends: he didn't feel like they were friends anymore. Marty, Pete's one-time best friend, was shocked when Pete told him all the reasons he didn't think they were friends. Marty, naturally, took it very badly. After a few days, one of Pete's other friends, Larry, suddenly shoved him into some razor coral, and that was the end of Pete's friendship with another of his friends. At this point the death toll (well, okay, friends-that-had-turned-on-him toll) had risen to 2.

Pete figured he could handle it because he had the support of all the rest of he crowd. It was still really hard seeing Marty and Larry; Pete could almost feel his coral-scarred side burn. He pressed on all right, though.

After a bit, the chasm between Marty and Larry and Pete and the rest of them became larger. In a bad way. Pete was suddenly being left behind by all the rest of his friends too. He was, abruptly, alone.

And in this way, Pete once again lost his best friends, and spent his Friday nights watching Gilmore Whales, alone in an empty house.

Poor, sad, Pete the Whale.

Sadly,
Lizzy ;-(

how to: sew on satin (without shooting yourself in the eye)

Sewing on satin can be a royal pain. Its slippery and slidey. It rejects stitches, snags, frays, and bubbles. It is hard to pin, hard to cut out, hard to sew, hard to press, and hard to finish. Satin generally just makes me angry.

But here comes LIZZY to the rescue! I have just completed 1 (one) satin gathered blouse complete with yoke, bell sleeves, and trim. In the past I have begun a similar shirt. It is currently in the shredder. Thus, I feel adequately qualified to offer some tips and tricks to sewing on satin.

  1. Buy the right satin. You should not buy it if it is heavy or thick (needles will spaz out when sewing), if you can't easily distinguish one side from the other (it will shine in different directions, in a poorly-made way), if it is exceptionally shiny (its not worth the slide trouble), if it is loosely woven (you can't pin it without snagging it), if it won't lie flat (just bad in every way), or if the person at the store has any difficulty cutting it out or folding it. Make sure it is light, quality, tight-woven satin.
  2. Make sure it feels nice on both sides. If it is too shiny it will be like plastic. If the back side is itchy you won't wear it.
  3. Once you have it cut out, serge around every edge of the pieces with a 3-thread rolled-hem stitch. Your serger's book will tell you how to do it, but you basically remove the left needle and its accompanying thread and adjust the tensions and stitch length so that you get a dense, narrow, petite little stitch that will keep your testy satin from literally going to pieces as you sew. Later, you will still need to use seam finishes on all visible seams or edges, but this will make it much easier to sew the fabric without it fraying all over the place. This is absolutely essential if you are gathering any part of the garment.
  4. Sew with fine, polyester-coated-polyester thread. Never use satin thread, especially if it matches the color of your garment. This thread is impossible to remove, as may be necessary, because you can't see it and will end up unweaving your own fabric. Also, it simply does not sew well on satin because of the lack of friction between the thread and fabric. Cotton thread, on the other hand, will snag and pull at satin. Heavy or even normal-weight thread can also pull and snag, so its best to use fine polyester thread.
  5. Press your fabric pieces after serging the edges and before sewing them. Avoid pressing at any other time.
There you are. With these easy precautions, you will soon be sewing on satin with...well, without hurting yourself or the machinery.

If all else fails, simply chant, "I am the human. You are the machine. I will triumph!" until your machinery complies.

With pride,
Lizzy ;-)

book review: phantom of the opera

Book Title: The Phantom of the Opera
Author: Gaston Leroux

****.5 (4 and a half stars out of 5)

The Phantom of the Opera is a mystery set in 19th-century France, at the Paris Opera House. It tells the story of Christine Daeé, a beautiful dancer in the Opera that is discovered to have an incredible voice...taught by her unknown teacher, the "Angel of Music". Meanwhile, new managers of the Opera House are dealing with letters, messages, murders, missing stars, and falling chandeliers, all courtesy of the "Opera Ghost". When Christine's childhood sweetheart Raoul coincidentally discovers Christine, they fall back in love and the "Angel of Music" becomes very jealous...more and more connections between this "Angel" and the "Ghost" become apparent until we discover they are one and the same. The Opera Ghost becomes angry...and soon...Christine must make the choice: Marry the Phantom, or secure the death of thousands, including herself. Raoul is all the while attempting a daring rescue...who will succeed? Which of the two lovers, the Phantom or Raoul, will win Christine and save or destroy the residents of the Opera House?

You have probably seen the movie, a musical adapted by Andrew Lloyd Webber from the novel. It is an incredible movie, which prompted me to read the book. It is a very good book, but, like many 19th century novels, takes some time to actually start. Leroux has a tendency to go on random tangents at the beginning of the novel, but as the story goes on it becomes more and more engrossing. The writing style, despite being very old-fashioned and wordy, moves at a fair clip that keeps you reading. The descriptions tend to be over-the-top, with the number of glass panels being continually noted as well as other equally trivial details. The novel requires some patience, but, despite these drawbacks, is a fairly fun read. I recommend it on the whole to well-read adults who don't mind heavy prose and a less-than-gripping story line.

Buy it here for $7 new or $0.98 and up used.

Best of luck,
Lizzy :-)

excellent. absolutely excellent.

My day was great!! My test in MATHEMATICS, my FAVORITE subject of all time (NOT) went fairly well. I did not shrivel and die, contrary to my previous assumptions.

My physiology test went very well also. I found it to be quite easy, miraculously. Which does not necessarily mean I didn't fail.

I applied to be appointed on Student Government, so we'll hope for that. However, I'm also being an officer in NHS and possibly FCCLA. I might do HOSA and will likely do French club, but we will just have to see about that. I would do FBLA but I never win anything, so I'd do a crappy job, and I haven't been really involved in HOSA previously so I'm not sure about that either...

I don't have dance today, which is a nice break although I dearly love dance, and I have a small window of time in which to purchase Mother's day presents. So I'm going to go do that.

Also, today I stuck my foot sporadically into someone's car.

Laughing,
Lizzy :-P

Hellllllooo Dolly!!

I didn't actually just say that.

I am really, really, really, really, really sick of homework and studying. It is only Tuesday but I swear this week has been 3 months long. Seriously.

Oh my gosh, its only Tuesday!

I have just returned from the fabulous corps de ballet. I looove dancing with all of my soul!! I have to do it every day or I physically experience pain. Its sad, really, how deep the love I have for dance is. My man is seriously going to have to compete with that.

Speaking of my man...or the absence of. Where is he?

I don't want to do my homework.

Blast. My mind powers are useless over the evil dictators we call "teachers"!! I must do as they say, or die.

Farewell,
Lizzy

so anyways

I sat down to do a bit of studying but I feel as if I am on the brink of death or something else attractive and lively (not) so here I am again.

My grades are not doing very well, I should probably do something about that. Who knows what or when...

I jet off to dance dance danceeee class in about half an hour...maybe less...I suppose I shall just feel like crap there too, blasted illness...however it shall still be fun because it is, as you will hear many, many times, my life.

I am pleine de stress, in all honesty, these last few weeks are merde...I have taken AP French and Gov tests but I still have:

  • AP Literature
  • Trig final (HUGE test worth 75% of my grade)
  • Physiology urinary test, term test, term final, and class final (all very large, pointwise)
  • Trig test on Wednesday (chapters 4 and 5)
  • Entire, full-size vest and shirt completed as well as 3 final sketches for fashion design
  • CAD state test
Mmmm...

My brain hurts just looking at it.

how to: take the AP test and like it!

Today I...

7:30 A.M.: Sitting in North Gym.
8:00 A.M.: Sitting in North Gym, taking AP Government test.
10 minutes sometime between 8 and 11:20 A.M.: Standing in North Gym
8:30 A.M.: Sitting in North Gym, taking AP Government test.
9:30 A.M.: Sitting in North Gym, taking AP Government test.
10:30 A.M.: Being attacked by wild penguins.
10:30 A.M.: Just kidding. Still Sitting in North Gym, taking AP Government test.
11:20 A.M.: Going to Physiology Lunch Review.
11:50 A.M.: Sitting in South Lab.
12:00 P.M.: Sitting in South Lab, taking AP French test.
10 minutes sometime between 12:00 PM and 4:05 PM: Sitting in teacher's lounge, eating croissants.
12:30 P.M.: Sitting in South Lab, taking AP French test.
1:30 P.M.: Sitting in South Lab, taking AP French test.
2:30 P.M.: Sitting in South Lab, taking AP French test.
3:30 P.M.: Sitting in South Lab, taking AP French test.
4:10 P.M.: Leaving South Lab, hating AP French test.

I literally was taking tests for over eight and a half straight hours.

But I'm okay! It wasn't even bad! I almost sort of liked it!

Tips for Testing:

1. Share a wall with the Ballroom Dance class. Then you can take advantage of their hilariously horrible music and general chaos.
2. Sit across from your best friend, in order to properly ridicule the test, and lip sync to the Britney Spears pounding through the wall.
3. Take the test with any number of hilarious/great people, so as to dance "with" them from across the room to latin rock.
4. Make sure your teacher brings you food.
5. Practice the art of B.S.
6. Always remember: all a test tests is how well you take the test.

Good luck in AP Test Week,
Lizzy ;-)

book review: life of pi

I am a huge fan of all things literature, so from time to time I do book reviews!

Book Title: Life of Pi
Author: Yann Marten

**** (4 stars out of 5)

Life of Pi is a story about a shipwrecked boy who survives the open seas on a life boat for 277 days...with an adult Bengal tiger on board. The story is divided into two sections. The first chronicles Pi's life up until the boat accident, and deals mainly with the boy's family's zoo, religion, and musings on geographics and other random tangents. The second portion details Pi's time spent on a lifeboat, learning to survive the elements, starvation, dehydration, and most of all, a tiger.

I have read Life of Pi twice now, and I must say, it was better the second time. The first time around, you only read the surface story, whereas the second time, you see the meaning, the symbolism, behind it. Section One drags, badly. It seems at first to have little or no correlation to Section Two, but they are in fact linked, and very eloquently so. Still, despite its importance and depth of meaning, Section One is just plain boring to read. Section Two drags a bit at times as well, but also has moments of extreme suspense. The ending of Section One gives the ending of Section Two, but somehow, that never lessens the suspense. The writing is wordy but beautiful, and the plot is intricate, interesting, and meaningful.

Despite lapses in movement, Life of Pi is truly an excellent, quick read. I recommend it to adults and teenagers 16 and older; few younger than that will be able to make it past Section One.

Buy it here new for $15.77 or used for $1.99 and up.

Happy reading,
Lizzy :-)

a brief history of meee...

I'm going to be posting lots today to get you appropriately caught up on who I am and how my life goes, since my other blog will be deleted and you will lose all of my archives. Quelle tragedie!!

Anyways, this week is rather mad. I have the lovely experience of taking three AP tests, less than some of my comrades but plenty to occupy me. I am confident on my AP Language/Composition, but I'm very nervous for AP French and AP Government. I doubt very much that I shall get higher than a 4, and I would not be a bit surprised if I failed.

Failure would not be all that big of a deal, but still... I do so want to pass!

I also have two physiology tests and a CAD (computer-aided drafting) test, as well as two physiology finals and a math final soon to come. Also this week and next, I have dance 3 times rather than two.

Simply put, now until the end of the school year is going to be quite sensationally insane.

However, I shall work on, on to victory...I have just completed my physiology lab, that's one thing down...

During the summer, I expect to work--I know I have a secure position at dear old Cold Stone Creamery, but I am hoping to acquire a position that pays more...I hear Forever 21 pays $10 an hour to be a cashier, which sounds fabby, and the Disney Store would be SO fun to work at, as well as Borders. I intend to apply to all of them. If I don't get hired, Cold Stone will serve me well.

I have, very much sadly, recently lost two of my best friends, one as a casualty of the other. The level of malevolence between us is extraordinary. However, I still have many excellent, excellent friends with whom I am completely satisfied. In fact, come to think of it, I hardly even mind...the others I am currently friends with are far more fun to hang out with than the two I've lost.

I am now going to eat, and then continue studying away as a proper student should.

All the best,
Lizzy :-)

the links to the right

I've got a few links to the right of this post under the title "Things Worth Sharing". I'm going to take a minute to explain why I've chosen to list these websites...

Blueprint:
Blueprint was a great lifestyle design magazine that, unfortunately, went out of business. However, they keep up an excellent blog featuring all sorts of new fashion and interior design products, as well as DIY ideas and insights.

Cupcake Bakeshop:
I absolutely adore cupcakes. Cupcake Bakeshop lists beautiful photos and in-depth recipes for making some very new, different, and avant-garde cupcakes. They're a bit extreme for me, but I take ideas from her cupcakes, and her basic recipes can be mismatched--they're very good.

Design*Sponge:
D*s put me on the map when it comes to design blogging. It was the first design blog I ever saw, and it is still my favorite. The author writes playfully, takes beautiful photographs, and has some of the best ideas and product finds of anyone. She's always on top of the trends, interior-designwise.

Harrison:
Drake Frost is a friend of mine with some cool and different ideas about life. His blog is sporadic and oriented with his personal life, much like this blog.

Meow Mix:
The best blog of all!! This is my design blog. Posts are seldom during the school year, but in the summer design style abounds.

Oh Joy!:
Another excellent design blog with fresh diction and lovely images.

Squeetus:
Shannon Hale, a successful, hilarious, witty and exceptionally compassionate author friend of mine, writes about books, writing, her family, and her life.

Tess:
Another good friend, Tess also has a new perspective to share. She's too busy to post often, so when she does, she says things that really matter.

Love,
Lizzy :-)
